This past weekend was the Monster Energy Mammoth Motocross 2012. Mammoth is one of the funnest races of the year, and has one of the best atmospheres to be around during a race. I was stoked to get the opportunity again this year to go up there and race this awesome race.
The week started out great with practice and also doing some fishing and hanging out with friends after practicing for the day. I was feeling good going in to racing and was looking forward to getting out there and doing my best.
Friday started out with the open pro class for us. They run a heat race and then a main event which is where you get your finish; the heat race is just for gate pick for the main. The heat race went good in open pro as I got a top five start and was able to work my way past a couple guys and end up with 3rd which would be a good gate pick for the main. The main event started out great as I came out with a second place start and was able to pass for the lead on the first lap. I was able to pull a little gap and lead the race for a little over half way before getting nervous and I started riding super tight and pumping up. I unfortunately didn't finish out the moto the way I wanted to, but I came out with a 5th overall for the day.
250 pro would be on saturday; however there would be no divisions so it was just a two moto format instead of a heat race and a main event. The first moto started out well as I was in second for a little while before sliding out and dropping back a few positions and ending up 6th when it was all said and done. Second moto started and I found myself in about fifth half way thru the moto. I felt pretty good , but unfortunately soon after the half way point I started having some bike problems and my gas boiled which didn't allow me to ride to my fullest abilities. I ended up getting passed as I couldn't do much about the bike and the way it was running. I ended up getting an 11th in that moto which would give me a 6th overall for the day.
The final day was 450 pro and I was looking forward to going out there and trying to put together an entire moto and showing what I am capable of. I knew I had the speed all weekend and showed it on Friday, I just needed to put together a full moto and stay strong the whole 25 minutes. The heat race on sunday started out with a horrible gate pick which left me way outside gate. I came out with a bad start, and was buried deep in the pack. I was able to keep picking guys off the entire moto and was able to stay strong the whole time. Although the result was a 4th which wasn't the greatest, I was happy with the way I rode and how I was able to come from so far back in the beginning. The main even started and I wanted to repeat the heat race just with a better start. I got out the a third place start and felt good. unfortunately I had a pretty big crash while running third and knocked the wind out of myself as I went over the bars. I got up and got going again, but it took me a couple laps to catch my breathe and really get pack into a pace. I was able to keep passing guys the entire moto and come from way back after the crash to 10th.
All in all mammoth was a great experience. The results weren't quite what I wanted, but I know what I need to work on and where I stand before going into Loretta's in just a few short weeks. Thanks to everyone for their support and I look forward to being where I belong at Loretta's.
Overall Results:
Open Pro - 5th
250 Pro - 7th
450 Pro - 10th
